Decluttering your home can seem like a daunting task.
No one randomly wakes up to a house full of stuff they have no use for or boxes piled high in a room unless it’s moving day. Whatever the case may be, clutter tends to sneak up on you. It often starts with a bag randomly dropped in hopes of being sorted through later. Next is an Amazon prime box you had every intention of disposing of but now has become home to your work. It might just be random stuff in the guest room that rarely ever gets used or the garage that receives most of the “boxes” than any other room, it becomes that storage bin that never seems to fill up.
Before you know it, the corners of your house are filled with things you haven’t touched or seen in months. The problem with decluttering your home is that we always make mental notes to sieve through it only to be dissuaded by the enormous task before us. A cluttered room has been linked as a stressed developer. It also breeds feelings of guilt at not being organized and in some cases, depression due to how cluttered space is.
We understand how one feels when they walk into a cluttered house. We know because we were there once upon a time. As a means to eliminate the feelings that accompany a cluttered home, we have created a guide that will assist you in gaining control of your home one room at a time.
Decluttering your home can seem like a daunting task let alone doing so in 10 minutes but with these steps and commitment, your clutter-free house is just within reach.
Let 10 minutes be 10 minutes:
When it comes to decluttering your home, one can sometimes get overboard. This is why we advise that your 10 minutes be 10 minutes. The thing with cleaning is that once you get into it, you reach a point where the adrenaline starts pumping and you feel as though you can go through the entire pile in a day. DO NOT GIVE IN TO THAT THOUGHT!
We say that because that path tends to kill a drive. Now you’re 30 minutes into a room either stuck on an item from the 90s that you didn’t realize you still owned or silently cursing why you even started as you face the mess before you. Before you embark on a decluttering mission, set a timer. Once your 10 minutes is up, remove the pile you organized out.
The 6-month rule:
For us, it is a 6-month rule but it could be anything from that to 2 years. It all depends on you. What this rule simply states is that if you come across an item that you haven’t used or even searched for within the last 6 months then you can do without it. Once such an item is found, the next step is to donate or trash said item.
This is commonly done with clothing items but we find that it works for everything. There is no point holding onto an item you forgot even existed before the cleaning began. This removes the clutter and keeps the essential items at the forefront.
Ask for help:
There is no shame in asking for help. Enlist your friends and family members to aid in the decluttering process. One person can tackle a lot in 10 minutes just imagine the results your home would get if you had more than one hand on deck, or a cleaning service such as Eh! Maids.
If you feel embarrassed about having someone see your house like this, you shouldn’t. We bet our bottom dollar, the person you don’t want to see the mess has one quite similar to yours. Besides, the end results in decluttering your home surely outweighs a perceived embarrassing moment.
Once your mind is made up on clearing out the mess, chances are you would want to sweep in and accomplish all tasks at once. A plan like that is often not achievable and can be quite overwhelming. This is why our advice is that you select a corner you intend to give your undivided attention for the next 10 minutes.
We have noticed that it is easier to accomplish many small tasks over one major task. The key is to pace yourself and stay focused on that area you have decided to tackle. Bit by bit, the clutter will decrease.
one of the easiest ways to be efficient and effective in decluttering your home is by doing your chores. Don’t crucify us yet, we assure you that there is a method to the madness. As you go on with your daily chores, carry a plastic bag along with you and toss in any item that looks out of place in that area.
Rather than tackling a room for your first cleaning spree, tackling areas, you come across daily makes it easier when it is time for the rooms. For example, while dusting your shelf, go through the items on there and toss out the unnecessary items.
A lot can be done in a small amount of time!
10 minutes might not seem like a lot of time to accomplish a task but with a drive to see your house clutter-free, nothing is impossible. Look beyond the massive piles of things around you and focus on your space being free of junk. With commitment, a time frame, and an area of focus each day, your house will be clutter-free in no time.
